1 Arrested After Person Found Dead At Home Of Deceased State Representative
DENVER (CBS4) - Denver police announced late Thursday morning that they have made an arrest in a homicide investigation.
Police were called out to a home on North Green Court near Federal Boulevard for a welfare check at approximately 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night. It's a home where state Rep. Frana Mace lived until her death in March at age 80.
Officers then found a man dead inside the house.
Police said they were looking for a white pickup truck that was stolen from the scene.
A parking enforcement agent spotted a truck at 1500 West Byers Place, about eight miles south of the crime scene, that matched the description and contacted police.
A person who was reportedly slumped over the wheel of the truck was then taken into custody and is being questioned. The license plates of the truck were removed.
"Obviously we've got a lot of work to do. We've contacted him, he's been brought down for questioning, we don't know if he's involved at all at this time," said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson.
The name of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the death haven't been released but family members told CBS4 the victim had been living in the carriage house on Mace's property. He was the ex-husband of Mace's daughter.
Family members said the victim was shot.
"It's kind of shocking here in the neighborhood. Because we've never had anything like this happen in 20 something years that we've been here," said neighbor Frank Baca.
Baca lives just two houses away from where the shooting happened.
"He was always at the house. It's not like he stayed out partying all night or anything like that. He was always friendly and always at the house," said Baca.
Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrisey came out to the scene Wednesday night as detectives investigated.
Neighbors who spoke to CBS4 had fond memories of Mace and said they were really upset that this happened in her home.
"I'm brokenhearted, I'm very broken hearted," said Karen Kellerman. "My heart goes out to her and her family. She was a wonderful lady."
The coroners office says a name could be released later in the day on Thursday.
