Families Evacuated From Homes After Retaining Wall Crumbles
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- Three families in Colorado Springs have been forced from their homes after a retaining wall started to crumble.
A homeowner received a permit to build a 20-foot retaining wall but instead built a 36-foot retaining wall. That wall is crumbling and has sent parts of the wall into nearby homes.
"My son lives here, my nieces, my dad. Twenty years ago they built this home from the ground up. What's happened behind there, every day you go out and look at it and say, 'Really?'" said one resident's family member.
The City of Colorado Springs has told the owner of the retaining wall to make the necessary repairs. If the owner doesn't, the city has said it will hire contractors to complete the job and bill the property owner.
The residents of those living in the evacuated homes will not be allowed to return until the city deems them safe.
