DENVER (CBS4)– Being sedentary is a health issue, serious enough that Wednesday was designated national “Get Fit Don’t Sit” day.
Research shows a sedentary lifestyle is linked to a 91 percent increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. That’s why the American Diabetes Association launched the day dedicated to get people moving.
“The ultimate goal is to get people moving, get them healthy, to eat healthy, and prevent diabetes,” said American Diabetes Association spokeswoman Mary Ann Littler.
One Colorado company, CNIC Health Solutions, Inc. (CNIC), has a personal trainer come in four times a week.
The company administers health insurance plans. Employees spend a lot of time at their desks, which comes with the job.
Employees are encouraged to exercise, especially on national Get Fit Don’t Sit day.
At CNIC, the day was marked with all sorts of activities, including jumping rope, stair climbing, hula hooping and calisthenics.
Ben Puetz, who works at CNIC, said it’s important to stay motivated.
“It’s okay to go talk to people, it’s okay to go for a walk, it’s okay to socialize as well,” said Puetz.
Sitting has been referred to as the new smoking. To prevent the side effects, experts recommend getting up and and getting active at least every 90 minutes.
