Intruder Banged On Several Doors Before Home Owner Shot, Killed Him

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- A home invasion suspect banged on several doors in one south Boulder neighborhood Monday night before he broke through the door to one home and was shot and killed by a man inside.

The home invasion suspect has been identified as Roberto Zamora, 19, of Boulder. Detectives continue to investigate what led up to Zamora's actions near South Boulder Road and Highway 36 on Pima Court.

"I actually watched it happen. I live in that room up over there and I heard some loud bangs last night," said neighbor Brock Derby.

Police said Zamora ran through the neighborhood, causing a big disturbance and making a lot of noise until finally he stopped at one home and broke in. The banging actually started in the back of the house when the female resident of the home called 911.

"He was running straight into the door at a full sprint and he crashed through, I watched him go head first through both of the doors," said Derby.

Derby said he didn't recognize the man who went crashing into his neighbor's home.

"He sprinted through a door that's what I saw," said Derby.

Police say Zamora attacked the man inside who had already grabbed his gun.

"We just haven't had anything like this to my knowledge and I've lived here 20 years," said neighbor Karene Watson.

The victims of the attack are well liked by their neighbors.

"I just feel for Jim and Jan. Jim is fabulous. I mean, he has a construction company, he helped us during the flood," said Watson.

"Of all the houses to break-in to, his was the worst. Just knowing him, when you see a giant elk head on the wall next to a gun safe you've got to know the guy is packing," said Derby

Police will hand over the case to Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett once they complete their investigation. It will be up to him whether charges are filed.
