Latest Cirque du Soleil Show 'Kurios' Puts Music Centerstage

DENVER (CBS4)- Cirque du Soleil is exploring both the weird and the wonderful in its latest show "Kurios" coming to Denver next month.

A big part of any Cirque show is the music. It's as intense a production as the show itself.

"If you didn't have the soundtrack with it, you'd lose almost half of the depth of the show," said drummer Kit Chatham. "The soundtrack is not only the audible big piece of the show, but we help follow it and enhance the actions on stage."

The show showcases the professionalism of the musicians as well as the work that goes into the endless rehearsals that make it all happen.

"That's my job. When I'm watching them, a lot of times I'll accent them when they're doing a flip or whatnot, so I have to be in time with them. I'm strengthening not only what they do physically, which is amazing, but adding that extra punch to it to elevate it to a whole new level," said Chatham.

Not only does the music create a bridge between acts, it creates an individual mood that sets the pace and somehow has to follow precisely if things do go quite as planned.

"You have to always attach yourself to the actions that are going on on stage because at any moment they could miss a trick," said Chatham. "I know what they're going to do next so it's almost like you're one with each other and you're like, 'I know they're going to redo this-- okay, let's go.'"

It's all done to create the atmosphere of tension, wonder and excitement that make up the magic of Cirque.

Kurios is at the Pepsi Center from June 11- July 26.
