Victims Drained After Theater Shooting Trial's Opening Statements

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4) - Victims didn't get a very soft start to the Aurora theater shooting trial which got going with opening statements on Monday.

They heard some of the worst moments from the mass shooting when in court District Attorney George Brauchler played a recording of a 911 call from inside the Century 16 theater while the gunfire was going on.

Monday's courtroom drama was the beginning of what could be a very difficult five months or so for those who survived the shooting and for family members of the victims.

"As a father, I really didn't realize how much pain we would all suffer together," said Larry Trujillo, whose daughter Tayler escaped the theater uninjured.

But just by having the trial, he said, the emotional wounds are made fresh again.

"I don't think the trial will do anything, because there's a bigger judge after all of this. I would rather just see (the defendant) get life in prison and move on with our lives, and I think it would take a lot of the heartache away," said Trujillo.

Another victim present for the trial, Marcus Weaver, was shot in the shoulder.

"Hearing that 911 tape ... It never feels easy. And it just brings back all the memories, at the beginning with the nightmares," he said.

Weaver calls the defense claims of insanity ludicrous, saying, "I just have a piece of this, of the puzzle, but at the same time, he's guilty. And that's what's going to be the verdict when it comes down to it and it's because he was sane, and he knew what he was doing."

The victims left court exhausted Monday evening, drained from hearing so many details of the shooter's meticulous plan.

One of the first victims shot was Caleb Medley, who listened intently to the opening statements in a wheelchair in the courtroom.

Brauchler gave the expectation that all of the victims and their families would be heard from. They will begin testifying as early as Tuesday.

Twelve people were killed in the July 20, 2012, shooting and dozens more were hurt.
