I-25 Shooting Victim: 'I Can Forgive'

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4)- A young woman who is recovering after she was shot in the neck while driving on Interstate 25 told her family that she can forgive the gunman.

"I think she believes that if she was meant to die she would have died," said shooting victim Cori Romero's aunt Lesley Quezada.

Romero remains in serious condition at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland where she's recovering from a gunshot wound to the neck.

Romero, 20, was the victim in what authorities believe to be a random drive-by shooting on Wednesday night on I-25. She was leaving work in Fort Collins when she said a car drove by, her window shattered and she was struck in the neck.

Romero was able to pull over to the side of the road and call 911 for help but it took a little while for her to realize what happened.

Quezada said Romero initially thought she had just been in a car accident, "She has a strong faith and that's what got her through the phone call that she was able to pray and keep herself calm. "

Romero remained in serious condition but family members are thankful she isn't paralyzed and that her arteries were unharmed.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Romero because she is facing a lengthy recovery.

Despite that, Romero's family said she is in good spirits.

"One of the things that she said that just impressed me, as a young girl who just came out of a crime, somebody shot her and she said, 'I can forgive him. I can forgive whoever this was,'" said Quezada.

The shooting that left Romero injured is just one of several incidents authorities are investigating in Northern Colorado.

The shooting came a day after a sheriff's van transporting prisoners was hit by some kind of projectile on I-25, shattering a passenger window.

The two incidents on Colorado's main north-south highway happened about 20 miles apart.

A fourth incident occurred Thursday in Loveland late Wednesday night. Police say a 21-year-old Greeley man was driving east on East Eisenhower Boulevard near North Cleveland Avenue and his rear window shot out.

Investigators have not confirmed that the incidents are related. They have not identified a suspect Romero's shooting or in any of the incidents.
