Medical Marijuana For Veterans Group Pushes VA To Consider Treatment

DENVER (CBS4)- A group rallied outside the current VA Hospital in Denver on Friday to push for using medical marijuana to treat veterans.

One advocate from the group "Operation Grow 4 Vet" said some veterans are having great success using cannabis oil for post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and chronic pain.

They also want the VA to take a closer look at medical marijuana.

"To please work in states where cannabis is legal at least, to allow the doctors to allow the integration of cannabis into the treatment regimen if that's what the veteran wants because it's a safe alternative," said Operation Grow 4 Vets spokesman Roger Martin.

Martin also said sometimes when veterans tell their doctors they are using cannabis, doctors will drop other prescriptions, which can lead to dangerous withdrawal.

Martin said that's why it's important for the VA to have a clear policy about how to handle medical marijuana.
