Douglas County Schools Apologize For Late Call On Closing Some Schools

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - The Douglas County School District is apologizing after a late decision to cancel classes at Castle View High School and six other feeder schools.

The district began notifying parents of a 90 minute delay throughout the district at 5 a.m. on Friday. Then they decided to cancel classes later in the morning at the Castle View School and its feeders because of the snowy condition of rural roads around those schools.

Castle View High is located at 5254 North Meadows Drive in Castle Rock.

Some parents said they didn't receive that information until 8:40 or 8:45 a.m., when many students were already in school or on their way. About 5,000 students in all were affected.

Some faculty members waited with students until they were picked up, but many say the late cancellation was extremely inconvenient.

"It was kind of bad. I mean, I live 40 minutes out from Castle Rock," high school student Trey Curran said. "Next time I wish they would just cancel school instead of giving us the 90 minute delay."

District officials say they recognize it was an inconvenience, but they say they made the decision for safety reasons.
