Cheyenne County Tornado Earliest On Record During April In Colorado

DENVER (CBS4) - A dynamic spring storm on April 2 produced snow in Denver and the first tornado of the 2015 season in Colorado.

According to Meteorologist Dave Floyd at the National Weather Service office in Goodland, radar and spotter reports confirm an EF-0 tornado touched down at 5:50 p.m. on April 2, about 4 miles north-northwest of Kit Carson, in Cheyenne County.

The twister lasted for about a minute.

A radar loop of the storm can be seen here.

No damage was reported from the tornado but strong winds associated with the storm did create major problems with visibility due to blowing dust.

Records at NOAA's Storm Prediction Center show the tornado is the earliest on record during the month of April in Colorado.

Modern tornado records in the United States began in 1950.

The previous earliest April twister on record was a rare mountain tornado that touched down near the town of Eagle, in Eagle County, on April 6, 1974.

That twister was rated an F-1 on the Fujita scale and did not cause any deaths or injuries.

Counting the 2015 event in Cheyenne County, as of this posting, there have been 95 April tornadoes documented in Colorado since 1950.
