Suspicious Device Investigated, Evacuations Near Auraria Campus

DENVER (CBS4)- A one-block radius near the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver was evacuated Saturday afternoon because of a suspicious device. The scene was cleared just before 7 p.m.

The only building in the evacuated area is the Campus Village Building which is adjacent to the Auraria Campus.

Denver Police tweeted out that roads in the area of 3rd and Walnut were closed because of a suspicious device.

A spokesman for the Denver Fire Department confirmed to CBS4 that the investigation centered around reports of a bomb at 318 Walnut, which is the location of student housing between Colfax Avenue and Auraria Parkway.

Hundreds of students were evacuated Saturday afternoon. Some were told by police to clear the building, others received text messages and emails that alerted them of the investigation.

A ladder was propped up against the building near the Denver Police Bomb Squad vehicle. Several fire trucks and police vehicles were parked near the building.

Just before 7 p.m. Denver Police tweeted out that the bomb squad found no explosive device.

The room and building were cleared and students were allowed to return to their rooms.
