Pocketknife Surrendered To TSA Found For Sale On eBay

DENVER (CBS4)- A man handed over his pocketknife to TSA at security checkpoints at Denver International Airport only to find it months later for sale on eBay.

It's a familiar routine at airport security where travelers empty their pockets and TSA will discover an item that's off limits.

Kevin Gursin from Colorado Springs surrendered his pocketknife at security, but maintains it wasn't just any pocketknife.

"My mother-in-law gave it to me. It had my full name on it and I had it for a number of years," said Gursin.

He said the TSA confiscated the knife and he continued on his flight. Last week he found it on eBay.

"Just out of curiosity I put my name into Google and all of a sudden my name's on eBay," said Gursin.

When asked if he had an eBay account, Gursin replied, "No. I clicked on it and there's a lot of three Cutco knives, one with the name Kevin Gursin on it."

"I was floored," said Gursin.

The journey his pocketknife took was most likely legitimate. According to the TSA, when passengers surrender items at security they become voluntarily abandoned property.

Many such knives are turned over to the General Services Administration, or GSA. A GSA spokesperson said the items are divided up into lots in bulk and eventually placed up for auction. Someone likely purchased Gursin's pocketknife there and then put it up for another auction on eBay.

"I assumed it was going to be crushed or destroyed. That didn't happen and it ended up on the internet. And that's my biggest disappointment," said Gursin.

By the time Gursin found the knives on eBay the lot had been sold for $28. He said he wishes he had known the process so he could have had the chance to buy back the pocketknife.
