Dopplick said police responded after receiving a call from a driver on Interstate 70. The driver said he was "actively involved in an ongoing road rage incident with the driver of a 2007 white Mitsubishi Outlander."

The driver told police he had a confrontation with the suspects earlier while driving through Glenwood Canyon. The ongoing incident escalated near Vail when the one of the occupants of the Mitsubishi "displayed and discharged a handgun."

The Colorado State Patrol assisted in pulling over the two vehicles involved near Frisco. The investigation revealed the Mitsubishi was reported stolen in New Mexico.
