Is It Too Early To Turn On The Sprinklers?

DENVER (CBS4) - After a mild and dry March with temperatures well above normal in the extended forecast, many people are asking what Dan asked today on Twitter.

While it's certainly tempting with the warm and dry weather, we can turn to climatology for a little advice.

In Denver, the average date for the last freeze of the season is May 5.

The earliest last freeze on record was April 5, 1977 and the latest was on June 8, 2007.

The following are the dates for the last freeze of the season in Denver over the past 10 years.

May 14, 2014
May 5, 2013
April 16, 2012
May 5, 2011
May 13, 2010
May 5, 2009
May 11, 2008
June 8, 2007
May 10, 2006
May 12, 2005

So while it might be tempering with the current weather pattern, my best advice is to water your trees and plants by hand for at least the next 4 to 6 week.
