Man Thought To Be Attacking Women Near CSU Pleads Guilty In Assault Cases
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - A man accused of attacking several women around the Colorado State University campus entered a guilty plea Monday afternoon.
There were at least six attacks police were investigating. Jose Angel Alderete-Gomez , 27, also faced charges in a domestic violence case involving his girlfriend.
The arrest late last year ended a frightening few weeks around the CSU campus. For months police warned women, especially around CSU, to pay extra attention and walk in groups. It seemed nobody could identify the attacker until a break in the case.
Gomez pleaded guilty to two charges in two separate cases -- one that he punched his girlfriend in the face, breaking her nose; and another that ties him to a series of assaults on women in Larimer County and around the CSU campus.
The attacks happened last summer and fall. One happened along the Highway 1 corridor to a woman riding her bike.
Police say they are still investigating the cases around campus. While some remain open, police say the pattern of attacks stopped as soon as Gomez was behind bars.
Gomez pleaded guilty Monday to assault, harassment and attempt to commit assault. He faces up to nearly 20 years incarceration. Sentencing is set for May.
