Youth Corrections Transparency Bill Advances At Colorado Capitol
DENVER (AP) - A bill to give the public more information about rapes, assaults and other crimes at the state's youth detention facilities has won unanimous initial approval in the Colorado House.
The bill ends an exemption from the Colorado Open Records Act for the Department of Youth Corrections.
The bill requires the release of critical incident reports with the names of juveniles redacted.
The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs has tried and failed to obtain records of incidents in the state's youth detention facilities, even though the paper asked for the records with identifying information removed.
Lawmakers approved the bill on a unanimous voice vote Monday. One more formal vote is required before the bill heads to the Senate.
