Controlled Burn Conducted At Denver Botanic Gardens

DENVER (CBS4) - A small controlled burn is being conducted at the Denver Botanic Gardens on Friday.

Groundcover is being burned in the DBG's Plains Garden in their York Street location.

The burn started at 10 a.m. and was expected to last several hours.

Controlled burns are done at DBG every two to four years to recycle nutrients and maintain a healthy balance in the gardens. They allow the seeds of forbs and wildflowers to germinate.

Staff warned Denverites that if they see smoke in the south central part of the Gardens near the Cheesman Park gate, don't be alarmed.

With some rain in the forecast for Denver, now is as good a time as any for prescribed burns, CBS4's Justin McHeffey reported Thursday night.

On Thursday the U.S. Forest Service set a prescribed burn in the Pawnee National Grassland in Weld County.
