Bonnie Brae Businesses Holding Fundraiser For 3-Year-Old Killed In Accident

DENVER (CBS4) - Businesses in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood are remembering a young boy who lost his life just before his fourth birthday.

Austin Strasser died after he and his mother and sister were hit by a car as they crossed a street near Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. Businesses this week have been serving up everything from sweet treats to family dinners for a special cause -- to honor the memory of 3-year-old Austin.

"It sounds like he was just a super happy, just amazing brother; and amazing little boy," said Christine Krall, a mother and special education teacher at the Sewall Child Development Center.

Police say Joan Hinkemeyer, 78, was turning from East Ohio Avenue onto South University Boulevard when she hit Austin Strasser and his mother and sister. Tiffanie Strasser and her 6-year-old daughter Audrey were not seriously injured. Police determined the family had the right of way.

This week eight nearby businesses are donating some of their profits to the Sewall Child Development Center where Austin attended preschool.

"It really is kind of a quiet thing, we just wanted to give," said Gina Martinez, co-owner of Blondie's Salon. "Just kind of a way to honor the family right now."

Krall joined students and their families at the Saucy Noodle restaurant where owners will donate 20 percent of pizza sales through Thursday.

"We all have young children and can't imagine what the family is going through at this time," she said.

The businesses will donate between 10 and 20 percent of sales.
