GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK, Colo. (AP/CBS4) — The Colorado State Patrol says a trooper has found a 6-year-old boy reported missing in Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in southern Colorado.

CBS4 partner KKTV in Colorado Springs reports the boy was walking toward a road near the park entrance Monday when he was found.

The child, Caleb Lund, was taken to a hospital but his condition wasn't immediately released.

The boy was last seen at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday with other children at a family gathering in the park.

The Colorado State Patrol released a statement saying Trooper Lance Sanchez decided to help search for the child before beginning his shift patrolling Alamosa County.

"Shortly after 7 a.m., Trooper Sanchez observed a child wearing a jacket but no shoes walking in a field by the entrance to the Great Sand Dunes. Knowing the basics of the missing child report, Trooper Sanchez made contact with the boy and immediately took him back to the command post at the Sand Dunes parking lot," the statement said.

The park is 140 miles south of Denver. It has sand dunes up to 750 feet tall, the highest in North America. The dunes cover about 30 square miles, and the park itself contains 235 square miles.
