CDOT Begins Nightly Closure Of U.S. 36 From Wadsworth To Church Ranch Road

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) - A section of Highway 36 is scheduled to shut down for construction every night at 10 p.m. beginning Sunday though next Saturday.

The closure of the Boulder Turnpike will take place from Wadsworth Parkway to Church Ranch Boulevard. It's expected to be disruptive for early morning commuters, but the highway will reopen daily at 5:30 a.m.

The construction is part of the more than $300 million effort to improve the transportation corridor between Boulder and Denver.

The closures will be in place so crews can perform "critical work on the Promenade and BNSF Railway bridges," according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

"This is definitely a vital part," CDOT spokeswoman Emily Wilfong said. "We're working on several bridges within the area all with the goal of opening this summer."

The U.S 36 and Broomfield and U.S. 36 and Church Ranch Park-n-Rides will relocate, but Regional Transportation District bus routes and schedules will run as normal. The Park-n-Ride lots will remain open but commuters should follow posted signs to the temporary stops.

"We have a lot of exciting work coming up on the project, especially throughout the next couple of months," CDOT Project Director Mark Gosselin said in a statement. "We are all working hard as we ramp up for a Phase 1 opening this year."

Several commuters told CBS4 they are easily frustrated by the ongoing construction. One driver said he avoids the highway completely, and it will take a lot more improvements before he returns to using it regularly.

Commuters should also note that the ramp from Interstate 25 to County Line Road is closed for construction. Crews will be working on the northbound off-ramp for the next three nights as they replace barriers and repave. The ramp should reopen each morning at 5:30 a.m.
