$500 Million Powerball Jackpot Creates Excitement

DENVER (CBS4)- The Powerball jackpot is at its biggest jackpots ever-- $500 million! That has people across Colorado rushing to stores to get their tickets before Wednesday night's drawing.

It's the fifth highest jackpot in Powerball history which has Colorado in the midst of jackpot fever.

Even with the odds of winning a long shot, 1 in 175 million, ticket buyers are optimistic.

"I don't imagine my chances are all that high but it can't hurt, right?" said one ticket buyer.

Even with the odds at a long shot, you're more likely to win the lottery than get a perfect March Madness bracket, with those odds 1 in 9.2 quintillion.

You're more likely to win the lottery than get six double yolks in a dozen eggs. Those chances are one in a trillion.

Colorado Lottery Director Laura Solano said there is no rhyme or reason to winning. Last year a winner living in Rifle won $90 million.

"I think every player has a theory, every player has a gimmick," said Solano.

"I wouldn't tell a soul and I'd probably buy myself an island somewhere," said one ticket buyer.

The Powerball drawing is at 8:59 p.m. Mountain Time. If nobody wins the prize grows and another drawing is scheduled for Saturday.
