Multiple Brush Fires Bring Important Reminder

LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) - Firefighters responded to three small brush fires that burned between Bowles and Belleview avenues on both sides of C-470 in Jefferson County Monday afternoon.

Smoke from the fires that broke out at approximately 2:40 p.m. could be seen from as far away as the Tech Center. Firefighters were able to quickly put the fires out.

About 3 1/2 acres burned.

West Metro Fire doesn't believe the fires were intentionally set, but believes they were human-caused because of their proximity to C-470.

Gary Armstrong with West Metro Fire said the early-season blazes are an important reminder.

"It's just that dry, which is really obviously unusual for this time of the year," Armstrong said. "It's really nice to have this wonderful weather, but you have to think twice and kind of pretend like it's July and it's been dry a little bit."

There are good snowpack numbers right now in the Denver metro area. The South Platte River basin is currently at 106 percent of normal. But after a couple of really warm, windy days like Denver has seen, the top level of vegetation can get really dry.
