CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – Authorities in Douglas County are investigating a hit-and-run crash involving a school bus. The sheriff’s office says a man who wrecked his car then tried to carjack other vehicles during his getaway.

The incident happened in Castle Rock near Highway 85 and Meadows Parkway Tuesday afternoon. Deputies say the suspect ran a red light and was hit by another car. According to the sheriff’s office, after being hit, the suspect’s car jumped the median and crashed into a school bus.

The bus driver was the only one on board at the time of the crash but was not seriously injured.

Deputies say the suspect then got out of the car and started running. In an attempt to get away they say he then tried to get into at least four vehicles near the scene. While attempting to carjack a vehicle a good Samaritan tackled the suspect and held him on the ground until deputies arrived.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t suggest civilians get involved in that type of incident, but in this case it worked out.

The suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, remains in custody.
