Man Sentenced To 40 Years For Role In Fatal Police Chase

DENVER (AP) — A man involved in a shooting spree and chase that left a Denver police sergeant injured and another man dead has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The Denver District Attorney's Office says 23-year-old Jude Montoya was sentenced Thursday for attempted first-degree murder. He was one of several people in a pickup involved in a police chase Jan. 16, 2013.

Investigators say the pursuit started when another man, John Montoya held a relative at gunpoint in Thornton. At least one of the vehicle's occupants fired shots at bystanders and officers during the chase.

Denver police Sgt. Robert Motyka was shot in the shoulder, and officers then shot and killed John Montoya.

Another man in the truck, 37-year-old Chuck Montoya, was convicted of attempted murder and was sentenced to 87 years in prison.
