Denver Singer Excited For 'Motown: The Musical'

DENVER (CBS4) - "Motown: The Musical" is coming to Denver. The Broadway show tells the story of how Barry Gordy founded Motown Records and promoted some of the nation's biggest musical acts. The musical features 40 of the biggest Motown hits.

CBS4 recently caught up with longtime Denver singer Hazel Miller while she was rehearsing with the Hazel Miller Band. Miller is a big Motown fan and still sings many Motown songs, but she has just one favorite.

"'Ain't No Mountain High Enough" ... Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell because it's your mantra. If you love somebody … 'I'll go to the ends of the earth for you' … and my mother did that for us … yeah ... seven of us," Miller told CBS4.

During rehearsal, Miller sang a medley of Aretha Franklin songs and said Franklin is her favorite Motown artist.

"Aretha Franklin and Steve Wonder because you can't do one without the other. The songs they write I'm still singing. I've been singing Aretha's songs since I was in 8th grade. I've been singing Stevie songs since I was in high school and people still jump up and run to the dance floor," Miller explained.

Like Miller, most people have a favorite Motown song or act. It's music that defined a generation.

"Creating something that will last I think forever … that's why it's important … because it does last. And it's influenced rock n' rollers, classical singers, everyone is influenced by Motown whether you admit it or not," Miller said.
