Avs To Host Red Wings In Outdoor NHL Game Next Season

DENVER (CBS4/AP) - The Colorado Avalanche will host their first NHL outdoor game at Coors Field next season.

The game will be played Feb. 27, 2016, against the Detroit Red Wings and held at the stadium of the Colorado Rockies.

Avalanche president Josh Kroenke said the team was "excited to be hosting this extraordinary event." The game is part of the 2015-16 NHL stadium series.

"The Coors Light NHL Stadium Series has been very successful, and we are honored to be part of it," Kroenke said in a statement. "We would like to thank the National Hockey League for selecting our organization. I'm especially happy for Avalanche fans who have been instrumental in our team's success since arriving in Denver."

Rockies owner Dick Monfort said of transforming the baseball diamond into a hockey rink: "We can't think of a better place to host a Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game than in the Mile High City in front of 50,000 fans at Coors Field."

It will be the first NHL game to be played outdoors in Colorado sports history. It will also be the first time the Avalanche have participated in an official NHL outdoor game.

"The outdoor game will be the headline event of our franchise's 20th anniversary season in Colorado, with many other great events planned throughout the year," Kroenke said.

The Coors Light NHL Stadium Series began in 2013-14,

"Playing in an outdoor game will be an amazing experience for everyone. To have this game in the state of Colorado, in a terrific venue like Coors Field, is something we are truly looking forward to," Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Joe Sakic said.

More details and ticket information will be released at a later date.
