10 Denver Police Officers Honored For Going Above And Beyond

DENVER (CBS4)- Ten police officers were recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty to help those who need it most.

They received the Citizens Appreciate Police award and were honored with a mayoral certificate of appreciation awarded by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

"Just take a minute and think, would you do this would you step outside of your comfort zone and would you do this for somebody you don't know. It's very hard to get an affirmative answer. But we're getting a lot of them here and that's why we're here today is to honor these officers, truly extraordinary effort we're putting forth in Denver," said CAP Board Member Jim Waters.

This year's CAP Award winners include Corporal Doug Grove, Corporal Abel Salas and Officer Mike McDaniel who helped find housing for a mother and her six children after she was kicked out of the apartment where she was staying.

Sergeant Chris Hoag helped give a stranded motorist a ride to an auto parts store after his car broke down on I-25.

Officer Dwayne Huddleston helped take care of a child after his mother was taken to the ICU in a diabetic coma until she was well enough to see him.

Commander William Nagle helped an elderly male buy gravel for his driveway when he discovered that the man would be fined since his property was not up to code.

Officer Florence Nagle purchased a $300 credit card for a special needs school to ensure that teachers have money to purchase snacks.

Corporal Joseph Sartain helped an at-risk, blind female secure her finances in an independent account so she didn't have to rely on her family who had been problematic.

Officer Joshua Vasconcellos purchased two bicycles with his personal funds and delivered them anonymously on Christmas day to two children who had their bicycles stolen.

Officer Tarl Spitzer helped a blind homeless man find shelter for the night after his friends had dropped him off at a Wendy's and left him there.

Formed in 1978 by Mayor Bill McNichols and District Attorney Dale Tooley, CAP is a non-profit organization that recognizes Denver police officers that serve the public above and beyond the regular call of duty. Since inception, more than 200 officers have received the CAP award.
