'Bustang' Bus Service Takes Passengers Along Front Range

DENVER (CBS4)- The Colorado Department of Transportation is kicking off a new bus service for passengers along the Interstate 25 and Interstate 70 corridors later this spring.

The "Bustang" will run from Union Station in Denver along I-25 to Fort Collins and Colorado Springs as well as along I-70 from Denver to Glenwood Springs and Vail.

The bus service runs Monday through Friday and is not specifically designed for skier and boarder transportation.

"In the mountain corridor we intentionally are not trying to get into that recreation market. Number one, it's a huge market, with the traffic congestion on the weekends we're not really sure how that might work," said CDOT Director of Transit & Rail Mark Imhoff.

CDOT hopes people will use the I-70 destinations for what it calls "essential services" like medical appointments or business. They also hope commuters will use the bus service.

Along the I-70 mountain corridor, Bustang will operate one round trip during weekdays between Glenwood Springs and Denver Union Station.

Along I-25, there will be six round trips per day, five peak, one off-peak, from Colorado Springs to Denver and five round trips per day, four peak, one off-peak, from Fort Collins to Denver.

The bus service will stop at existing park-and-ride locations along each route with fares reflected by length of trip. Multiple trip packages will be available at a discounted price as well as a 25 percent discount for disabled persons and seniors 65 years old and older.

The Bustang fleet will feature 13 buses in rotation on each respective route. Each coach is equipped with restrooms, bike racks, free WiFi, power outlets and USB ports. Coaches offer a 50-passenger capacity and are handicap accessible.

The one-way trip fare is as follows:

Fort Collins → DUS: $10/trip
Colorado Springs → DUS: $12/trip
Glenwood Springs → DUS: $28/trip
Vail → DUS: $17/trip

The bus made its debut at the National Western Stock Show Parade on Thursday morning.
