Baby Girl Arrives 2 Minutes Into 2015 In Durango

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — A girl born two minutes into 2015 in Durango appears to be Colorado's first baby of the new year.

The Durango Herald reported that Evelyn Rose Gosney was born at Mercy Regional Medical Center on Thursday, just 12 minutes head of the first baby born in Denver in 2015, Kathleen Marie Hathaway.

The first babies in Colorado Springs and Pueblo didn't arrive until a few hours later.

Kira Rayburn, 38, and husband Rayburn Gosney, 39, named their new daughter for her paternal grandmother, who died two years ago at age 101. They have three other children — Grayson, 13; Carter, 9 and Rayburn II, 21 months.

Olympic biathlete Tracy Barnes gave birth to the last baby born in Durango in 2014. Barnes, 32, made headlines last year when she gave up her spot on the U.S. team so her twin sister Lanny could go to the Sochi Games.

She and husband Gary Colliander, the head coach of the Durango Nordic Ski Club, welcomed 5-pound, 12-ounce Tiegan Olivia at 8:24 a.m. on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Denver Zoo also announced an early arrival — a zebra born early on Thursday. Mother Crestone and her baby are being kept in a warm barn until the weather warms up. A naming contest is planned.
