Teen Driver Faces Vehicular Homicide & DUI Charges In Crash That Killed Student

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) – A teen driver involved in an accident that killed a high school student from Broomfield has been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI.

The accident happened Nov. 3 during an early lunch hour outside of Broomfield High School. Chad Britton, 16, was hit and killed while he was getting into his car.

At first it seemed the crash was a mere accident, but CBS4 has learned the driver who hit Britton, a 17-year-old student from a school in Lafayette, was under the influence. He stayed at the scene following the collision.

Broomfield police took the driver's Kia as evidence in Britton's death. Investigators closely examined the car while waiting for the teen driver's toxicology results. Weeks later they discovered there was enough evidence to file vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving and other charges.

According to the Adams County District Attorney's Office, investigators also found marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the white Kia.

Due to the driver's age he will be charged as a juvenile and faces a maximum of two years in a youth correctional facility for the fatal collision.

Because it's a juvenile case, the driver's name will not be released.

Some of Britton's friends told CBS4 that knowing charges are being filed provides some relief, yet it's still a difficult time for everyone.
