Mother Starts Donation Campaign After Suspicious Fire Cancels Preschool Classes

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – Authorities are searching for whomever is responsible for an arson at a school in Aurora that forced classes to be canceled until next Monday.

The damage from the fire that broke out early Tuesday morning will have Meadow Point Elementary closed for the rest of the week. Aurora fire investigators are now looking into the fire's cause as either arson or reckless behavior.

"He was sad. He loves school, so it was definitely not what he wanted today," parent Courtney Miller said.

Miller has started a donation campaign to help students replace things they've lost that aren't covered by insurance, such as toys and art and crafts.

"I wanted my son to learn that even though people do bad things, that there's a lot of good people in the world," she said.

"It's rare to get a fire in the middle of the night at a school," Capt. Diane Lord with the Aurora Fire Department said.

Lord said neighbors called in about the fire within minutes.

"Started receiving multiple calls while they were in route of bystanders noticing smoke and flames coming from temporary classrooms," Lord said.

School officials are now looking at how to accommodate the 50 to 60 preschoolers who are out of class.

Tustin Amole with the Cherry Creek School District said insurance investigators are assessing the damage and the cost estimate hasn't been determined yet.

"As much as we can get to try and help them out would be wonderful," Miller said.

Miller is collecting school supplies, arts and crafts, and any other donations that will help the children go back to school, but she's not collecting money. Contact Miller with donations by emailing her at cmiller0927.cm@gmail.com.
