Breckenridge To Vote On Retail Marijuana Locations

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4)- Breckenridge is one of the most visited towns in Colorado and that makes the debate over retail marijuana shops even more heated than in other communities across the state.

The Breckenridge Town Council debated the issue for so long they've decided to let residents vote on the issue.

The issue was at the center of the debate for so long they missed the deadline to get it on the November ballot. Now there's a special election to put the issue to residents which will decide whether retail pot shops should be allowed in the downtown core.

"We've been there for five years and we haven't had any issues and I don't think a lot of people realize they're asking a long standing business to leave its location," said Breckenridge Cannabis Club Owner Caitlin McGuire.

Right now the Breckenridge Cannabis Club is the only retail shop in downtown Breckenridge. It's located right on Main Street. If the majority of the town votes no in the special election, it will close up shop and leave in February.

"Really we're just playing the numbers game. I think if people turn out to vote it will be good for us so we're trying to make that happen," said McGuire.

There is a consensus that retail shops should not have free reign downtown but exactly what kind of restrictions are placed on them are still up in the air.

"A long debate occurred for several months and the community came out and voiced their opinions very loudly and the council ended up being split," said Breckenridge Town Manager Tim Gagen.

"We've heard from multiple people that yes or no doesn't get their point across whether it was no or yes it doesn't fully represent their position," said McGuire.

Opponents say the retail marijuana shops tarnish the downtown, pedestrian and tourist-friendly feel. The Breckenridge Cannabis Club told us 90 percent of their business is tourists.

"Most of the tax money the town has collected is coming from downtown and right now we're the only store downtown so without knowing everyone's exact numbers I think we're at the forefront," said McGuire.

The town said they're expecting $500,000 from marijuana taxes this year.

"I think people are coming here in higher numbers than they ever have before," said McGuire.

If the vote passes the town council will still have the final decision.

"They'll probably allow it but how many, where and what other conditions would be put on the one to remain or any new ones to come downtown," said Gagen.

The other pot shops in Breckenridge are located two miles to the north. None of the owners of those shops wanted to comment on this issue.
