CDOT Almost Ready To Open Bridge At Federal Boulevard & 6th
DENVER (CBS4) - The westbound ramp from 6th Avenue to Federal Boulevard remains closed as the Colorado Department of Transportation gets ready to get rid of an old bridge.
CDOT has been working on this project since February.
The new bridge at the location opens Monday morning, but in order to demolish the old bridge the westbound off ramp getting off 6th will be closed until Thursday night.
This new bridge opening Monday morning replaces the old Federal Boulevard bridge that was built in 1956.
"It was an obsolete bridge that was time to be replaced," CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford told CBS4. "This is part of a much broader project -- the U.S. 6 design build project."
The Knox Court bridge over Highway 6 was replaced earlier this year.
The Federal Boulevard bridge becomes the second of six bridges in all getting a new look.
"Then next weekend starting on Saturday night we're going to have a 55 hour closure where we will demolish the bridge," Ford said.
Watch out for major closures on Highway 6 during the demolition phase next weekend. But for this week, in the run-up to the demolition the westbound off-ramp approaching Federal Boulevard will remain closed until Thursday night.
"No explosions unfortunately, which is always much cooler, what you'll see actually are ram hoses, that are machines that eat away at the bridge and demolish it," Ford said.
The demolition of the old Federal Boulevard bridge next weekend will be going on around the clock and it will involve 100 workers.
