DENVER (CBS4) – The Broncos have the No. 1 ranked defense against the run right now, and one of the large reasons for that is linebacker Von Miller.
Miller was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month on Thursday morning.
It’s the second time Miller has won the award.
CBS4’s Vic Lombardi showed game film on Wednesday night’s 10 p.m. newscast that displayed just how disruptive Miller can be.
“I’m very impressed with Von Miller’s role in the run game. He’s usually the guy in charge of getting to the quarterback but look at him! He throws the tight end and tackles (the running back) for a loss,” Lombardi said. “Usually Von and DeMarcus Ware’s job in the run defense is to set the edge. But many times Von will just do things on his own.”
Lombardi then showed a play where Miller was lined up against tight end Antonio Gates during last Thursday night’s game against the Chargers.
“He gets inside of Gates on this play and pushes the running back to the other side of the field,” said Lombardi, pointing out that his teammates on the other side of the line then tacked the running back for no gain.
Miller has really shined in the Broncos’ wins this month against the Cardinals, Jets, 49ers and Chargers. Those opponents had a league-low 258.8 yards per game in those games.
In October Miller had 14 tackles — nine of which were solo tackles — and seven sacks, which led the league this month. He also knocked down one pass.
Miller is currently second in the NFL with 10 sacks and leads the active players in the league with six consecutive games with a sack.
The last time Miller was awarded the NFL’s monthly defensive player honors was in November 2012, his rookie season.
