Longmont Police Investigate Theft From Deadly Car Crash Scene

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Longmont are investigating who stole from a victim in a deadly car crash. The focus of their investigation is the possibility the thief was a first responder.

The crash in late September took the lives of both drivers.

"Two people were killed, both of them female, one of them a mother," said Longmont Police Commander Jeff Satur.

As first responders and police worked to care for the surviving passengers and investigate the crash, something else happened to items that belonged to one of the victims.

"We were made aware of some missing contents from a purse," said Satur.

Police said the theft was reported by family and the department has called on the Boulder County Sheriff's Office to be an impartial investing agency on the case.

One of the questions they hope to solve is whether those first on the scene to help the victims also committed a crime.

"We think it was something internal, one of these agencies, a personnel-related problem," said Satur. "It could be a first responder, investigator, police officer."

Satur said finding out what happened and why is crucial to maintain the public's faith in those who have pledged to protect and serve the community.

"It's important to us, our credibility, our trust and so it's disheartening," said Satur.
