Jurors Reconvene In Denver Jail-Death Trial
DENVER (AP) - Jurors have resumed deliberations in the civil trial of five Denver sheriff's deputies accused of using excessive force against a homeless street preacher who died in the city's downtown jail.
The federal court jurors reconvened Tuesday morning after conferring for six hours Friday. An attorney has asked them to send a message to law enforcement and award a multimillion dollar payout to the family of Marvin Booker, who died in 2010. The deputies shocked him with a Taser while he was handcuffed, put him in a sleeper hold and lay on top of him.
The lawyer for the deputies, Thomas Rice, says their actions were in line with the sheriff department's policies, and Booker's poor health killed him.
Booker family attorney Darold Killmer says the deputies were malicious.
