1 Hiker Rescued, 1 Found Dead On North Maroon Peak

ASPEN, Colo. (AP)  - A second hiker missing in the Maroon Bells area has been found dead.

The man's body was found Friday on North Maroon Peak, shortly after searchers found his climbing partner alive but injured elsewhere on the 14,000-foot-plus peak.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office identified the man who died as 37-year-old Jerod Weatherall and the surviving climber as 32-year-old David Richardson. The Aspen Daily News reports both men are from Vail.

They were reported missing Wednesday night by a fiancee of one of the men after they failed to contact her as expected.

Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteers searched for the hikers Thursday on foot but snow prevented a search from the air. A break in the weather on Friday allowed searchers to get help from a helicopter from the Colorado National Guard's high-altitude training site.
