Boulder City Council Discusses Smoking Ban Expansion

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - On Tuesday night, the Boulder City Council explored a proposal that would strengthen the city's existing smoking ban.

The ordinance would ban cigarettes, cigars, pipes and e-cigarettes, among other types of smoking on a wide array of outdoor city property, including:

- parks and trails

- downtown Boulder and the city's business district

- leased facilities like the Dairy Center for the Arts and the Boulder History Museum

- bus stops shelters and areas around libraries

"There are people who would like to see the smoking ban city-wide. I think it's a no-brainer myself," Boulder Mayor pro-tem George Karakehian said. "There are people out there who won't be happy about it. But it really fits this city. I think it is a very simple next move."

The city already bans smoking on the popular Pearl Street Mall and other pedestrian-heavy areas.

Residents are mixed.

"It's OK if it's within the mix of all these people here on Pearl Street, but moving it to the trails where I'm out in my own space, I should be able to do whatever I want," resident Chase Campbell said.

A woman told CBS4: "I'd like to ban smoking everywhere."

Still, others think the proposal infringes on too many freedoms.

"I hate freedoms and privileges being taken away from us every single minute," Michelle Egizi, a non-smoker, said. "I'd like there to be no laws and to see what happens. And then if things go wrong, then we make laws."
