Colorado Asks Supreme Court To Settle Gay Marriage

DENVER (AP) - Monday's hearing in federal appeals court in California on whether states should be allowed to ban same-sex marriage follows a similar case federal judges in Denver considered this summer.

The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in July found same-sex marriage bans in Utah and Oklahoma unconstitutional but put a stay on the ruling.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers on Thursday led a group of 17 attorneys general in states that have banned same-sex marriage in asking the U.S. Supreme Court to resolve the issue.

The attorneys general don't want their states possibly left liable for legal bills from future lawsuits if marriage bans are overturned. But their brief doesn't specifically ask the court to uphold their bans.

Several same-sex couples have challenged Colorado's marriage ban with lawsuits in state court.
