Shortfall Not Affecting Colorado Guard Training

DENVER (AP) — A federal funding shortfall for the National Guard isn't affecting training in Colorado, at least for now.

Some states have cancelled or postponed regular weekend training drills for the nation's citizen-soldiers because of a $101 million budget cap.

However, the Colorado Army National Guard doesn't have weekend drills planned until later this month. There are funding efforts underway in Congress that could restore funding before the next scheduled drill next weekend.

Capt. Darin Overstreet says daily training sessions required for promotions have also been going ahead as planned so Guard members don't have to cancel their days off from work.

To cover its share of the shortfall, the Colorado Guard has instead canceled travel for managers.
