Denver Considering Ban On Certain Kinds Of Hash Oil Extraction

DENVER (CBS4)- The City of Denver is considering banning hash oil extraction after the method of making hash has proved dangerous with several explosions and numerous injuries.

The closed loop hash oil extractor would still be allowed in licensed businesses but if new regulations pass people who extract hash oil at home would no longer be allowed to use such solvent-based methods for the sake of public safety.

There have been approximately 30 explosions triggered by solvent-based hash oil extraction in Colorado this year.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said enough is enough.

"It's dangerous as we've seen, the butane is a highly flammable gas, will collect, if not properly ventilated can by triggered just by a spark of static electricity," said Executive Director of Marijuana Policy for Denver Ashley Kilroy.

They are proposing an ordinance that would prohibit home extractors from using solvent-based methods.

Brett Mauser, owner of licenses hash maker Mahatma Concentrates, supports the change.

"When you look at home extractors, they don't have the regulations, protocol for safety. It's very wild, wild west-ish if you will," said Mauser. "It's not a privilege that should be allowed for them."

Home extractors could still use water or food-based extraction methods. The city would continue to allow licensed businesses to use sophisticated and regulated solvent-based extractors. Mauser said they're the only ones who should.

"Leaving it up to people that are trained, licensed, following the rules, is really where this needs to stay," said Mauser.

The city ordinance goes to initial discussion on Sept. 16. There will be an opportunity for public comment. If the ordinance passes a violation could include a year in jail and up to a $999 fine.
