Officers Targeting Drunk Drivers This Holiday Weekend

DENVER (CBS4)- Law enforcement across Colorado will be targeting drunk drivers over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

"This is one of the last big weekends of the summer. We understand that, we understand a lot of people are going to be traveling," said Colorado State Trooper Josh Lewis. "Expect to see a lot more police and troopers on the roadways."

Between the Rocky Mountain Showdown, the Taste of Colorado and all the holiday weekend festivities, there are plenty of activities to enjoy.

"We want people to enjoy them, celebrate and have fun. But ultimately do so responsibly. If you're going to be celebrating, if you're going to be partaking in anything that might impair your judgement, make sure you have a plan ahead of time," said Lewis.

If drivers choose not to plan ahead and get behind the wheel, the Colorado State Patrol will find you. And that doesn't just include alcohol.

"Whether it's marijuana, alcohol or any other prescription drug use," said Lewis. "Be aware, but understand, if you're doing everything right, you don't need to worry about them."

The right thing to do this weekend may be choosing to ride instead of drive.

"The resources are out there, we just hope people will take advantage of them," said Lewis.

Some of those resources include the "Last Call Lot" near 21st and Larimer where drivers can park free of charge overnight, taxis, light rail or find a sober friend to get behind the wheel.
