Victims Okay With 1 Year Hit & Run Sentence

DENVER (CBS4) - A young man who was driving an estimated 100 mph before being involved in a hit and run was sentenced on Thursday to a year in jail.

Police caught up with Tyler Sherman, 21, nearly a month after the Christmas Eve accident in Centennial on Interstate 25.

Mark Peretsman and his wife Jean Duane were hurt along with her elderly mother.

On Thursday the couple told CBS4 they approved of Sherman's sentence of a year in jail plus probation.

"The defendant had apologized to us very emotionally," Peretsman said. "His family got up and were character witnesses on him and the district attorney also made a very compelling argument."

That argument included giving Sherman a chance to rebuild his life.

"He did take accountability and he did apologize eight months later," Duane said.

Duane says she also appreciated the strictness of the sentence, which came after a guilty plea. If has any violations while on probation he will serve six years in prison.
