Heightened DUI Enforcement Underway Statewide

DENVER (AP) — Law enforcement agencies across Colorado are increasing DUI enforcement during the Fourth of July weekend.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol, along with local police across the state, are increasing enforcement through Monday.

Last year's enforcement period resulted in 507 DUI arrests throughout Colorado. During that time, 12 people died in crashes, and more than a third of the wrecks were alcohol-related. Of the dozen fatalities, none of the drivers or passengers was wearing their seat belt or a helmet.

A DUI can cost more than $10,000, and impaired drivers can face jail time, the loss of their driver's license, higher insurance rates, fines and court costs.
