USA Soccer Fans In Denver Disappointed After Thrilling Ride

DENVER (CBS4) - Most fans thought Team USA was out of the World Cup after falling behind Belgium 2-0, but the excitement was just starting. The Americans couldn't pull off the comeback, but it was a thrilling ride for the fans.

The U.S. was bounced from the World Cup after falling to Belgium 2-1 Tuesday afternoon, but not before the gritty team developed a huge following. Many fans in LoDo were still cheering "U-S-A" well after the loss.

At some bars in LoDo the line was approximately 20 to 30 minutes long to just get in before the game, and then the crowds overflowed into the streets.

"As close as you can get to the game, you can't always get the best shot," a fan said.

Cheers were in unison and the groans seemed choreographed. Construction crews watched big screens on patios from their work sites and office employees peered out of their windows.

With the extra time after playing to a 0-0 tie in regulation, Belgium scored almost immediately. They then scored again to the dismay of the fans. But then the Americans got a goal back and had plenty of good chances to tie the game up – but it wasn't meant to be.

Fans turned their eyes from the big screen to the future.

"I think they played good because in the past they haven't played in the second round," another fan said. "In the future they will do better."

The next World Cup won't be played for another 4 years.
