Eightmile Fire Near Canon City Now 40 Percent Contained

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP/CBS4) — A lightning-sparked wildfire near Canon City that has so far charred about 524 acres is now 40 percent contained.

Firefighters took advantage of more favorable weather conditions Saturday to dig lines around the blaze about 6 miles northeast of the city, but hot and windy conditions hampered efforts on Sunday.

The wildfire, which was reported last Monday, grew to just under a square mile by Friday from 60 acres reported earlier.

A pre-evacuation notice was issued for 16 homes in the Red Rocks subdivision Friday night, alerting residents to be ready to flee if needed. That notice remains in effect.

The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain on Bureau of Land Management property in Phantom Canyon.
