Oops! Scammers Call Jefferson County Fraud Hotline

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS) - Scammers using AT&T to lure in victims made the wrong call in Jefferson County.

"I got a call saying this is AT&T and you're entitled to a $32 rebate. It came in on the district attorney's fraud hotline," said Cary Johnson.

Johnson is a consumer fraud investigator for the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

"That's ridiculous irony ... where people are supposed to be calling in saying that fraud is occurring to them," Johnson said, "We got a call that probably involved some kind of scam."

AT&T said it hadn't heard the specific message offering rebates but does warn there are many scams out there including ones asking customers to visit fake websites.

Johnson said this is a case if a call or message seems phony, it probably is.

"Legitimate businesses are never going to call to give you a rebate to say there's a problem they're going to solve with you," Johnson said.

AT&T said it does not send email requests to customers asking for personal account or credit card information.
