Aging Elephant Dies During Move To Colorado Zoo

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — The lonely, last African elephant living at a South Carolina zoo is dead after trying to make it to a new home.

The Greenville Zoo said Sunday that the 44-year-old elephant known as Joy died while being taken to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.

She was being transported because both zoos believed she would receive better geriatric care. Joy was due to live with four other female African elephants in an exhibit designed for aging animals, giving her more opportunities for social contact.

The elephant was being taken by highway between the two zoos. Greenville Zoo Director Jeff Bullock says Joy was found dead by a zoo employee in a trailing vehicle during a fuel stop between Amarillo, Texas and Colorado Springs.
