Texas Fugitive Caught In Denver Gets 28 Years For 1992 Slaying

PLAINVIEW, Texas (AP) - A man sought for a 1992 killing in Texas and captured last summer in Colorado has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the fatal shooting.

A Hale County jury on Tuesday sentenced 41-year-old Jose Luis Aguilar after he was convicted of murder.

Federal marshals in Lubbock located Aguilar last July in Denver after learning he was living in the area under an assumed name. Aguilar was returned to Plainview for trial over the slaying of 27-year-old Guadalupe Fraire during an argument at some rodeo grounds.

The defense sought a lesser charge such as voluntary manslaughter. Aguilar testified he felt threatened by Fraire and was protecting himself.

Prosecutors say Aguilar shot Fraire because the victim had called him names.
