Denver Hosts 4th Annual Cannabis Cup

DENVER (CBS4) – High times returns to the Mile High City for the fourth annual Cannabis Cup.

Previous years only allowed medical patients, but since marijuana is now legal in Colorado, this is the first time the event is open to all adults 21 and older.

Thousands waited to partake in Cannabis Cup Denver. The sold out event stipulates that no selling of marijuana is allowed but smoking is in designated areas.

Vendors like Peter Runyon from Mountain Sights Souvenirs say sales have grown tremendously with many coming from out of state.

"Now that it's legal -- boom," said Runyon.

Organizers estimate about 37,000 people will attend the event through the weekend -- more than double last year's record.

From usual marijuana products to edibles to souvenirs and education about the growing industry, this year's Cannabis Cup promises to be the biggest than ever before.

"This year they got a bigger venue because there are just so many people," said Dominic Cordova from Bhang Cannabis Chocolates.

Bhang is the defending Cannabis Cup champion for best edible.

"It's new. Fr a lot of people it's taboo," said Cordova.

Come Sunday, April 20 at 4:20 p.m., fans joke that it will be the largest smoke out of its kind. However, vendors hope what the public takes away is marijuana's overall benefits from an economic boost to entertainment and to health.

"There's such a good medical benefit to this whole industry that I hope that we can expand and it will get universities to study it, and to have the industry take off," said Cordova.
